«Hellvik Mannskor» was founded in 2003 – in order to perform one June weekend during the Hellvik Festival. The plan was to give one evening concert and to participate at a Sunday service.
The only criteria to participate was that you had to be a male. The volunteers were a crowd of 20 men ranging in age from the conductor Rino (24) to the violinist Otto (79)!
Having completed the challenging task and reached the goal after three months practice – we all agreed that this was fun, and that we all wanted to carry on with the choir.
We decided on weekly rehearsals, and Monday nights were spent at the local school singing, planning and setting new goals.
On Monday December 8th 2003 we officially founded «Hellvik Mannskor». John Olav was elected as chairman and he was accompanied by Kjell Vidar and Tor Arild as board members. Seven members signed in that evening: Otto, Andreas, Magne, Oddvin, Jostein, Ola and Kåre Jostein.
Our first Christmas concert in December 2003 took its toll with us! To sing «O Helga Natt» three-voiced is not an easy task. Just ask anyone!
We regarded the concert as a big success with more than 100 guests (not bad for a small community of approx 900 inhabitants). This proved that our fan group not only counted close family members.
The following year we had an outdoor concert at «Urodden» in June, where we presented new tunes such as «Min første kjærlighet» and a hit from the 60's: «Happy together» with new lyrics in Norwegian by our conductor Rino.
We still had fun together and enjoyed exploring new challenges. We manifested the tradition of our Christmas concert – and this year we had 150 attendants. Oh what joy!
Then spring 2005 came along, and our conductor Rino decided to leave us to continue his studies in Bergen. We started tough negotiations with Haldor Henriksen – it turned out that he was eager to start and we were even more eager to have him, so .......
During fall 2005 we started preparations for our third Christmas concert in a row. The Board and members of the choir expected to have the «same procedure as every year», but our new conductor Haldor had other plans in mind!
We had to accept in full that we were expected to deliver the Christmas carols both three- and four voiced! It sure was difficult – but we thoroughly enjoyed it – and the success was indeed a fact when the the audience applauded and we had to give extras.
To avoid being stuck in old tracks, we considered various alternatives for new challenges. A small advertisement in the newspaper gave us the idea of a grand tour to the USA. The decision was concluded and the destinations of our choice were Minneapolis and Seattle
Plans were made and airfares booked for all the members of the choir – and an additional 37 family members would also like to join in. Departure date was fixed for October 7th 2006.
All our rehearsals since are focused on songs that we will include in our US concert program. To fund such a trip, we have taken on odd jobs – everything from carpentry, wood chopping to cleaning in a new hospital wing. And while singing and working, our expectations have steadily increased.
